Elvish

As if further proof were needed of Elvis' enduring popularity, my 4 year old daughter is now a Fan. We have the relatively recently released CD "30 #1 Hits" (impressive - 30 #1 hits, and "Blue Suede Shoes" inexplicably was not one of the #1's), and Zoe has it on continual replay. So I have gotten to hear the lyrics of those songs many, many times! And one theme seems paramount - see if you can spot it from these snippets:

You make me so lonely baby, I get so lonely,I get so lonely I could die. (Heartbreak Hotel)

Don't be cruel to a heart that's true (Don't Be Cruel)

You spend all my money too much
Have to share you honey, too much
When I want some lovin', you're gone
Don't you know you're treatin' me wrong (Too Much)

a hard headed woman been a thorn in the side of man. (Hardheaded Woman)

And now you say that we are through
I'm a fool, but I’ll love you dear
Until the day I die (A Fool Such as I)

Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I'd rather go on hearing your lies
Than go on living without you. (Are You Lonesome)

and my favorite

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl [Marie] was in my arms and swore to me
She'd be mine eternally
And Marie's the name of his [a 'very old friend"] latest flame (His Latest Flame)

(No O mio babbino care's from these feckless lasses!). Why would a heartthrob croon such forlornness? I have no speculation, let alone answer. Only another Elvis-lyric-related question: what are we to make of these lines from Jailhouse Rock:

Number forty-seven said to number three:
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company
come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me."
